Craig Schlatter

Craig Schlatter, the Ukiah School of Music's newest piano instructor, moved from Central Illinois to Ukiah in August 2006 to work at the Community Development Commission of Mendocino County.   Describing himself as "not your typical piano instructor," Craig holds a B.S. and M.S. in Economics, with a concentration in Community and Economic Development.   Prior to graduate school, Craig founded and directed the Academy for Music and the Arts in Bloomington, IL, a nonprofit arts academy providing music, art, and theatre instruction to 150 youths.
Craig has been teaching for seven years and performing professionally for 15.   He has toured with the U.S. Marine Corps band as a jazz pianist, appeared as a guest artist on WGLT-FM's Acousticity , and written music for University and professional groups.   In 2005, Craig released his first CD, Spirit of the Prairie .   For audio samples, go to www.cdbaby.com/schlatter .   In July 2007, Craig appeared at the Acoustic Café in Ukiah with artists Spencer Brewer, Elena Casanova, and Elizabeth MacDougal.   Currently, Craig performs for Jazz on Wednesdays at Patrona's Restaurant in downtown Ukiah with Will Siegel, guitarist and musical companion.

"I take a non-traditional approach to the teaching of piano," remarks Craig.   "The importance of quality music instruction cannot be overemphasized, and my approach seeks to at once spark interest and enthusiasm in music while providing the tools necessary to excel at and enjoy playing."
