Laura Smith

An accomplished, award-winning fiddle player and violinist, Laura Smith teaches and performs Oldtime, Celtic, Classical and Contest styles with her brother Darin Smith, bringing creativity to her music while staying firmly rooted in acoustic tradition.

Laura began music on the piano when she was almost four.   After seven years she switched to Celtic Harp where she discovered some of the music she plays today.   Laura finally found her instrument, the violin, at age 13, and studied fiddle and classical styles with many great teachers including Darol Anger, Tashina Clarridge, Tristan Clarridge, Megan Lynch and Yoko Atcheson.
A versatile musician, Laura plays traditional music for contra dances and classical violin in the Ukiah and Lake Co. Symphonies, and performs with her brother Darin.

Currently the California Young Adult State Champion, Laura has also won the Cloverdale Oldtime Fiddle Championships,   as well as Wells Nevada, Marin Co. Fair, and Ukiah Pumpkinfest, and has placed second in her division at the Western Open Championships.   Laura runs the Redwood Empire Fair fiddle contest in Ukiah, CA., and has judged at other contests including CA. State and Cloverdale.

Her students have also taken prizes at several contests.   Laura teaches privately at studios in Potter Valley and Ukiah, and is the director of the Russian River Fiddlers, a group of fiddlers of all ages comprised of her students.   Laura also teaches 4th through 8th grade strings and orchestra at the Waldorf School in Calpella.
